Chinese Medicine in America

Years of development form a system of their own.

Acupuncture cupping of traditional Chinese medicine began to rise in the United States as early as 1970s. In 1972, U.S. President Nixon visited China and requested an acupuncture anesthesia demonstration. His delegation was shocked after witnessing the process of Chinese doctors cutting the lungs of patients without anesthesia under shadowless lights. It pushes the acupuncture fever in the United States to a climax.

The popularity of acupuncture and massage in the United States has played an effective role in the popularization of traditional Chinese medicine in the world, enabling people of the world to have a certain understanding of traditional Chinese culture of medicine. It is worth noting that although western countries, especially the United States, have largely recognized the components of traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture, massage, cupping, etc., Chinese herbal medicine is still controversial. Western countries believe that the ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine lack scientific verification, their safety lacks theoretical support, and the traditional theoretical knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine has not received recognition.

In the United States, Acupuncture is considered to be equivalent to traditional Chinese medicine and Acupuncturists to Chinese medicine practitioners. At present, the United States and some western countries collectively refer to all components of traditional Chinese medicine from China as "Oriental Medicine", which includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine and massage.

The acupuncture education or Chinese medicine learning in the United States started in the 1970s. In 1975, the first acupuncture school, the New England Acupuncture School, was established. In the 1980s, the period of development began. Acupuncture schools were set up one after another in  California, New Mexico, Florida and other countries. By the 1990s, the number of schools had reached a peak. In the 21st century, traditional acupuncture and Chinese medicine schools are maturing and deepening.

Acupuncture education in the United States is divided into professional acupuncture education and comprehensive university acupuncture education. There are four main forms, namely, the independent college of traditional Chinese medicine, the major of traditional Chinese medicine education in the medical college of western medicine, the continuing education course of traditional Chinese medicine and NIH postdoctoral program of traditional Chinese medicine. Master's degree, doctor's degree, postdoctoral degree and continuing education all start from master's degree.
