JW201 vs JW202 Explained: Scholarship vs Self-Funded Student Visa Forms

JW201 vs JW202: Which Student Visa Form Do You Need?

If you're applying to study Chinese in China, you'll hear about two visa sponsorship forms: the JW201 and the JW202. Both are required to apply for a Chinese student visa (X1 or X2), but they're issued to different types of students. Here's everything you need to know.

What Is the JW201 Form?

The JW201 Visa Application Form is for foreign students coming to China under one of the following programs:

  • Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC scholarship recipients)
  • Intergovernmental exchange programs (bilateral agreements between China and your home country)
  • Provincial government scholarships administered through official channels

In short, the JW201 is for scholarship students whose enrollment is coordinated by the Chinese government or an official exchange program — not for self-funded students.

What Is the JW202 Form?

The JW202 Visa Application Form is for self-funded international students who are applying directly to a Chinese college, university, or language school like KCEL.

If you're paying your own tuition and enrolling directly with a school (rather than through a government scholarship program), you will receive a JW202 form. This is the most common form for international students coming to study at private language schools in China.

What Does KCEL Provide?

KCEL issues a School Admission Letter to enrolled students. You take this letter to the Chinese consulate in your country and apply for an X2 student visa yourself. KCEL does not submit anything directly to the consulate or immigration authority — the application is yours to make, and we're happy to answer any questions along the way.

KCEL currently supports the X2 visa only (valid up to 180 days). If you have questions about whether your study plan qualifies, contact us.

How the Visa Process Works (X2 via KCEL)

  1. Apply to KCEL and complete enrollment
  2. KCEL issues your School Admission Letter
  3. Take your Admission Letter to the Chinese consulate in your country
  4. Apply for your X2 student visa (valid up to 180 days)
  5. Enter China and register with KCEL upon arrival

Allow 4–6 weeks from enrollment to visa in hand. See our visa support page for full details.

Common Questions

Is the Admission Letter the same as a JW202?

No. A JW202 is an official Chinese government sponsorship form issued by accredited universities. KCEL provides a School Admission Letter, which is used directly to support your X2 visa application at the consulate. For most short-term language study, this is all you need.
